Port of Long Beach and MARAD Sign Nuclear Energy Agreement

The future of maritime energy is taking shape in Long Beach.

The Port of Long Beach and MARAD have signed a first of its kind partnership to advance Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology for commercial vessels, ports, and other maritime assets.

The partnership will bring together the Port, MARAD, and other federal agencies to examine operational protocols, safety standards, and inspection processes.

It also complements the Port’s new lease agreement with BlueCore Energy Inc., allowing the company to assemble, test, and store maritime power modules to help develop energy sources for the goods movement industry.

As the industry looks toward more resilient and innovative supply chains, this could be an important step in shaping the future of maritime infrastructure.
